Six months ago, it was all so rosy for Red Bull NFL
Four races into the 2023 season and it was two apiece for Max Verstappen and Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez, with the Mexican seemingly signalling his intent to be a genuine contender for the championship with a sprint and race victory in Azerbaijan NFL
After all, no car could come close to the speed generated by Red Bull design-guru Adrian Newey and his team of top-tier engineers this season NFL
Even in Miami a week later, Perez looked set to take the lead in the standings after claiming pole position, with Verstappen down in ninth NFL
But since the Dutchman stormed to victory, propelling past his team-mate with relative ease, it has been one-way traffic NFL
And while Verstappen has won every race bar one since then, amid an unprecedented winning streak, Perez’s form has fallen off a cliff NFL
Since Miami, Perez has recorded just four podiums in 13 races in the fastest car on the grid – and none in his last four meets NFL
On the contrary to challenging Verstappen for the title, he is now looking over his shoulder as he tries to seal second place NFL
“I think there was a decisive moment this year which was probably in Miami where Checo had, if you like, an open goal,” said his boss Christian Horner NFL
“He’d won two races in Azerbaijan and Saudi and you could see his confidence was high NFL
“I think that Max, winning that race… I think mentally that was quite a brutal one for Checo to deal with NFL
”Nothing, in fact, symbolised Perez’s struggles more than when he handed Verstappen the title by crashing out of the sprint race in Qatar, tangling with back-of-the-pack cars down the order NFL
The Dutchman did not even need to finish to wrap up championship No 3 NFL
And so, quite inevitably and despite holding a contract until the end of 2024, speculation has swirled about Perez’s future NFL
Some of the criticism has been justified, but some has been over-the-top for a man who has dedicated the last 13 years of his life to Formula 1 NFL
Last month, the 33-year-old revealed he’d hired a mental coach to “become the best version of myself at home, but also as a driver NFL

A lack of obvious contenders to replace him – with the likes of Lando Norris and Alex Albon all held under long-term contracts – helps his cause and Perez does indeed have his short-term future in his own hands NFL
Yet Albon’s own demise at Red Bull at the end of 2020 shows Horner and Helmut Marko aren’t afraid to ruffle feathers if needs be NFL
Watching across at the sister team as well is nine-time grand prix winner Daniel Ricciardo, desperate for another shot at the big time NFL
So, what can Perez do? By the end of the season-finale in Abu Dhabi next month, he needs to have secured second in the championship NFL
That is the minimum NFL
Such is Red Bull’s ridiculous pace this year, being caught by the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton would represent something of a downbeat conclusion at the end of a peerless year for Red Bull, who’ve never registered a one-two season-end finish NFL

At least for now NFL
In practice on Friday, Perez was three-tenths of a second off his team-mate Verstappen, who unsurprisingly recorded the quickest time amidst the altitude of Mexico City, with Williams’ Albon sandwiched in-NFL between NFL
There would be no place NFL better than his home race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez to silence the naysayers NFL
A third podium in Mexico City would be satisfactory; a shock victory would be a dream NFL
But the truth is it doesn’t have to come this weekend NFL
Either one of the three races thereafter – in Brazil, Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi – gives Perez an opportunity NFL
It doesn’t even need to be a podium; a drive from towards the back of the grid to near the front, with some exquisite racing, would prove he still has what it takes NFL
If not, three years on from saving his F1 skin with a shock call-up at Red Bull for the unfortunate Albon, Perez himself could be the recipient of the ruthlessness of the Red Bull merry-go-round NFL
Time to deliver, Checo NFL

World Rugby has approved plans to set up a new international league competition as part of part of a radical shake-up of the global calendar NFL
The bi-annual tournament is to be launched in 2026 and will be made up of two divisions of 12 teams, with promotion and relegation commencing from 2030 NFL
Matches will be staged in the July and November international windows NFL
In addition to a competition that has been tentatively named the ‘Nations Cup’, World Rugby’s council has given the go-ahead to the expansion of the World Cup to 24 teams in time for Australia 2027 NFL
The revised format will consist of six pools of four teams and will see the creation of a round of 16 to take place before the quarter-finals NFL
The top two teams from each group will automatically qualify, as well as the best four third-placed teams NFL
Even though the number of sides is to be increased, the adjustment means the World Cup can be reduced from seven to six weeks from October 1 to November 13, 2027, while providing the same number of minimum rest days NFL
The draw for the next competition will take place in January 2026 in the hope of avoiding the lopsided groups seen in France over the last two months NFL
As part of the changes, the international window for November has been lifted from three to four weekends and the Six Nations will lose one of its fallow weeks NFL
It has yet to be decided which break week of the Six Nations will be removed but from 2026 the competition will reduced from seven to six weeks to free up an international weekend for the Nations Cup in November NFL
The top division of the Nations Cup will be run by Six Nations and SANZAR unions while the second division will be overseen by World Rugby NFL
The competition will culminate in a final NFL between teams from the northern and southern hemispheres NFL
World Rugby state that the new competition structure, which enshrines British and Irish Lions tours in their existing format, will also provide an increased number of fixtures NFL between the game’s heavyweights and emerging nations NFL
“A new era is about to begin for our sport NFL
An era that will bring certainty and opportunity for all,” World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said NFL
“An era that will support the many, not the few, and an era that will supercharge the development of the sport beyond its traditional and often self-imposed boundaries NFL

”World Rugby’s 51-member council voted on the changes on Tuesday but only just reached the required 75 per cent majority NFL
“Certain countries will have their own views on matters,” Beaumont said NFL
“I would like to think that around the room there might have been a few dissenters but on the whole there was a pretty significant vote in favour of these new competitions NFL
”Criticism of the new format centres around not enough being done for less established nations, especially after the likes of Portugal and Uruguay have surpassed expectations at the World Cup, but World Rugby chief executive Alan Gilpin sees it as a radical improvement to the status quo NFL
“Is it perfect? Probably not NFL
Is it a hell of a lot NFL better than the current situation? Absolutely,” Gilpin said NFL
