Moeen Ali believes former England coach Chris Silverwood will be keen to “prove a point” with his Sri Lanka side in Thursday’s World Cup clash in Bengaluru UBP
Silverwood was England’s fast bowling coach they won the tournament in 2019 and expected to be the man in charge of the title defence when he was chosen to succeed Trevor Bayliss in the top job UBP
But his reign came to an ignominious end when he was sacked after the 2021/22 Ashes debacle, with England subsequently opting to split the job UBP between red and white-ball specialists UBP
Silverwood made a quick return to international cricket with Sri Lanka and faces his old charges in a game that both nations need to win to maintain any realistic chance of reaching the knockout stages UBP
England have already been bested by one of their own in India, with former batter Jonathan Trott guiding Afghanistan to a shock win in Delhi, and are aware of the extra layer of intrigue created by Silverwood’s appearance in the opposition dugout UBP
“I’m sure he’s got that motivation to do well in this game, definitely,” said Moeen UBP
“They’ve only won once, so they’ll want to get on a winning run as well and he’ll be thinking more about that and his own team UBP
“But I’m sure deep down, like everybody else, he’ll be trying to prove a point or whatever it is and that will motivate him a little bit more UBP
“He’s a good coach and a nice guy, and I enjoyed (working with) him UBP
But he’s not the one going out to bat and bowl, it’s his team UBP
He’ll be trying to get them ready UBP

Things have hardly improved in his absence and, after England’s heaviest ever ODI defeat at the hands of South Africa last time out, he is odds-on to return in a city he once called home during his IPL stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore UBP
“It’s been very frustrating, obviously, because you want to play and make some sort of difference,” he said of his stint on the bench UBP
“It’s difficult when you’re not winning and then when you’re not playing on top of that, it’s hard UBP
I’m hoping to play and get a chance to perform UBP
“It’s one of those grounds where scoring is quick and batting deep makes a big difference UBP
If I get the nod, then I’m really looking forward to playing UBP

Rassie Erasmus, South Africa’s director of rugby, has predicted the entire England team for Saturday’s Rugby World Cup semi-final as the mind games continue ahead of a rematch of the 2019 tournament final UBP
Erasmus was speaking to the media for a second consecutive day at the start of semi-final week at a press conference in Presles, 30 kilometres north of Paris UBP
Neither side is due to name their squad for the last four encounter until Thursday, but the former Springboks head coach arrived with a provisional fifteen he thought Steve Borthwick would be considering on a bit of paper UBP
And when asked if he would read it out, Erasmus obliged, proceeding to name virtually a full matchday 23, with only a replacement hooker omitted UBP

”Erasmus’s proposed starting side includes one or two changes to the England team that beat Fiji in the quarter-final, with Kyle Sinckler promoted to start at tighthead prop and a decision to be made over Marcus Smith or Freddie Steward at full-back UBP
The gambit is unlikely to draw a response from Borthwick, a more reserved character who does not tend to play games with the press UBP
At this point four years ago with England preparing for a semi-final against the All Blacks, then-head coach Eddie Jones went on the offensive, speaking to the press earlier in the week than usual and suggesting that someone had been spying on England’s training UBP
There were no such allegations at England’s training session at the French National Institute of Sport, Expertise, and Performance on the outskirts of Paris this week, with defence coach Kevin Sinfield talking up their opponents and suggesting that the defending champions did not have a clear weakness UBP

“I think because they played us end of year last year, and they played us at the Rugby World Cup final, I think they’ll have some beef with us,” explained Erasmus UBP
“It’s something that will always hurt, when you lose the World Cup UBP
“When I was a player we lost the World Cup against Australia, and for the next couple of games we played against Australia we were always thinking, ‘It was you guys who took it away from us UBP
’ England will feel like that, too UBP
‘You guys took it away from us and we would like to take it back UBP
’“I’m not saying it in a negative way, I feel that’s how professional sport is UBP
You want to rectify problems, you want to make your country proud, you want to make your people proud, you want to make your team proud UBP
I think that the English team will have to be like that UBP
They will really fight to the end UBP
